Early detection 

Early detection of malignant diseases poses an almost essential condition for curative treatment. The relative ease or difficulty of early detection is derived from the tumor's anatomic location, for example: early detection of skin cancer is dependent on regular monitoring of skin lesions by dermatologists or plastic surgeons. Early detection of colon cancer is more complex, and involves visualizing the colonic lumen through endoscopic procedures. Early detection of ovarian cancer is further complex, as both symptoms and visualization modalities fail to detect the disease early.

Ovarian cancer, aside from being an aggressive and devastating disease, is characterized by its ability to advance and grow undetected, without causing discernible symptoms: disease spreading in the abdominal cavity usually leads to delayed diagnosis, in stages at which the disease is no longer curable.
